Youth Programs on the High Holidays
We at Agudath Sholom want our parents and children to enjoy a meaningful holiday season. Arrangements have been made to secure babysitting and youth groups for our children. All sessions will be conducted by responsible young men and women. Babysitting will take place in the room next to the Lotstein Library. Children who are 3 years old through 1st grade will be in the Lotstein Library. Junior Congregation will be in the Sukkah.

The schedule is as follows:

Babysitting (up to age 3)
Children must be dropped off and picked up by a parent or older sibling. No child will be permitted to leave the room unescorted. Since there are few toys on site, each child should bring toys from home to play with and share for the time they are at the sitting service.

YOM KIPPUR SCHEDULE:

Age 3-6
Yom Kippur - Monday, September 28, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Grades 2-6, Junior Congregation
Yom Kippur - Monday, September 28, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Blessing of the Children

Rabbi David Walk -- Rosh Hashanah 5770
Rabbi Walk
That ancient Greek philosopher and social gadfly, Socrates was famous for admonishing Greek citizens that the unexamined life is not worth living. This idea could be the motto for our Rosh Hashanah, whose alternate name is Yom Hadin or Day of Judgment. How can anyone have the chutzpa to go before the heavenly tribunal without first trying to examine our merits and demerits? So part of the preparation for our Hebrew New Year
must include a careful catalogue of all our actions in the previous year. It's not enough to buy a new outfit and some apples and honey. We must do an ethical accounting. The question arises what are the criteria for making this reckoning?

I'd like to suggest two ways of looking at this issue. The first step to gathering this material for our personal file is to remember the following crucial detail. We all perform both sins and mitzvot. Too often people make the mistake of believing that we only have to list our bads. That's just not true. On Rosh Hashanah we not only want to eliminate our negatives but accentuate our positives. Way before Cole Porter expressed that idea, King David said, "Turn away from evil and do good (Psalms 34:15). So, please, remember all those wonderful things you did last year, and hopefully repeat them next year.

The other point I want to make is hinted at by the prophet Isaiah in the Haftorah read on the Shabbat immediately after Tisha B'av, which begins the series of seven prophetic readings ushering in the High Holiday season. Isaiah tells us metaphorically about measuring the mountains and valleys. The words he uses for the measuring devices are peles and maznayim (Isaiah 40:12). Both terms get translated as scale. But we know that Hebrew is a pure language with no synonyms. So, what is the difference between these two types of scales? The maznayim is the old balance scale, where you weigh the product against standard weights. The peles has only one attached weight and the measuring is done by sliding this weight further or closer from the standing post. This distance gives the weight. Isaiah, I believe is informing us of the two ways in which we must measure ourselves. We have to weigh ourselves against societal norms, but we also must weigh ourselves against own expectations for proper behavior. There are two weighing methods, one objective and one subjective. We have to learn from this metaphor to measure ourselves doubly as we move toward our annual Day of Judgment.

Rosh Hashanah begins the challenging period called the Ten Days of Repentance. This time span ends with Yom Kippur, and presents us with the trial of attempting to improve ourselves in the sight of God and in our own eyes. This is very hard, and many of us fail, finding ourselves repeating the same mistakes year after year. But if this process has any chance of success it must follow a reasonable procedure. This sequence of steps leading to true repentance or improvement must begin with a clear picture of what we've done, both good and bad. This requires the careful examination discussed by Socrates. Remember, what made Socrates so annoying in ancient Greece was his habit of asking tough questions. This pushed many Athenians to greater personal growth, but drove others to demand Socrates' exile. We must be our own demanding Socrates to have an effective New Year.

May we all have a happy, healthy, improved New Year.

Zach WohlbergZachary Wohlberg
Bar Mitzvah
September 5, 2009

Zachary is in the 8th grade at Bi-Cultural Day School and looking forward to high school in September 2010.  He is a member of the Teen Tzedakah Foundation Council.  Zachary enjoys all kinds of sports.  He plays on the BCDS Bobcats and the JCC Travel Basketball team.  He also plays baseball for the National Lione Little League.  His favorite sport is football, with the New York Jets as his favorite team.  Zachary loves camp and has spent many summers at Camp Lavi.  He has always looked up to his older brother, Jason.  His biggest accomplishment is being a big brother to Nicole and Josh.  As his chesed project, Zachary is giving a significant portion of his Bar Mitzvah money to buy special exercise and physical therapy equipment to the IDF Navy Seals unit which, due to the rigors of their work, has a significant issue with injuries.  Zachary is the son of Sharon & Simeon Wohlberg.  The first part of his Bar Mitzvah took place in Israel in August with a siyum for learning a tractate of Gemora with his grandfather.  In addition, he celebrated with friend and family in Stamford on September 5, Parshat Ki Tavo.

Noah is an eighth grader at Bi-Cultural Day School in Stamford. He has thoroughly enjoyed his time preparing for his Bar Mitzvah with Bob Abrams and Rabbi Cohen.  His enthusiasm for Judaism shines through his studies at BCDS and his learning at Yeshiva Bais Binyomin.

Noah is a big sports fan, particularly enamored of baseball and his New York Mets.  He has played baseball in both the Fairfield County Ct Jewish Baseball League and the Stamford American Little League, as well as playing basketball with the JCC travel team and the BCDS Bobcats.  Most recently, Noah won a team-Gold medal in bowling at the 2009 JCC Maccabi Games in Westchester for Team Stamford.  Some day, Noah hopes to take over as the commissioner of the FCCJBL from his dad.

Noah joined the North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry's Twinning program which matched him up with a Bar Mitzvah boy of Ethiopian descent now living in Israel. The twins have exchanged gifts and are now pen pals. Noah has also been active in the Teen Tzedakah Foundation Council helping to direct teen donors' funds to appropriate Jewish causes.  Noah's parents (Dinah and Seth) are very proud of his accomplishments while his sisters (Sarah and Rina) may be very proud, but they try desperately not to let him know it.

Daniel Soifer

Daniel Soifer
Bar Mitzvah
October 24, 2009

Daniel Soifer is the oldest child of Ami and Louise Soifer. He is currently a student in 8th grade at Scofield Middle Magnet School. Danny is very passionate about tennis and guitar. Tennis has been a big part of his life, not only watching his family play but competing in many USTA weekend tournaments himself.  He recently won the Mother Child 14 and Under Division Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament in New Haven, Connecticut with his Mom for the second year in a row. It was very exciting receiving his award from 2 very famous tennis pros, Amelie Mauresmo and Sam Querrey.  When Danny is not on the tennis court he really enjoys spending time with his friends and playing on his PS3. This summer with a knee injury, he took up swimming with the Long Ridge Club Sharks.  Being a great athlete and a quick learner he was able to pick up a new sport in just one summer.  Everyone is welcome to join us on Shabbat, October 24, as Danny is called to the Torah.  His Mom, Dad and both sets of Grandparents are very proud of him.
